Historic School with no fence

Abyan Public School

Did you know that Abyan Public school is the first formal school in the whole region of Sool and Sanaag built by the British Colonial back in the 1940’s?

It is also the ONLY public school in Las Anod, a city of over 70,000 people. Meaning its free to attend for all students.

Crumbling and aging wall.

With extremely high rates of poverty, for most nomadic parents school fees are understandably not a priority when food and shelter are scares.

Abyan is a blessing to the community. They only ask for commitment and dedication from the students and parents.

We ourselves were blown away by the enthusiasm of the staff who receive little to no money to keep the school going.

However, funds and resources are in dire need. Worst still there is a huge security issue, and not necessarily what you imagine.

Beginning of the constructions

The school has no gates, meaning anyone, including the friendly, at times aggressive goats and camels regularly walk into class. While livestock disrupting the students is humorous and sometimes needed, other times it’s a lot scarier, as random strangers who have no connections to the students often walking in or camping on what used to be the playground.

Still with all these challenges Abyan keeps going because of its commitment to educate the 300 students between grades 1 – 4, who would otherwise have no education.

We stepped into action with your help and built and an outside round wall funded and implement by GTLTG.

We are not the hero’s here but that gift we provided with your help you made a huge difference for the kids TO LEARN and GROW, in a safe and secure environment.
